Carl Pears 'Mr. Baseball' retired from Penn Power, was WWII vet A funeral service will be held Monday for Carl Pears, 55 Reno Road, Jefferson Township. He died at 7 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, in his residence of natural causes. He was 78. Mr. Pears was born March 26, 1924, in Sharon to Calvin H. Pears and Caroline E. Stewart Pears. An alumnus of Hickory High School Class of 1943 in Hermitage, he retired in 1986 after 39èyears as a meter man for Penn Power in Clark. He previously worked for National Castings Division of Midland-Ross Corp. in Sharon. Mr. Pears was a U.S. Army veteran, having served as a corporal during World War II. He was a member since 1958 of Charleston United Methodist Church in Hermitage, where he formerly served as a church trustee. He also belonged to the National Rifle Association; American Legion Post 432, Wheatland; and Reynolds Retirees Bowling League. He was a past president of the Mercer-Crawford County AA baseball league and its predecessor, the Pymatuning League, and also coached the Jefferson Township team since 1948. Carl Pears could be regarded as "Mr. Baseball" to many in the Mercer County area for his help in providing a team and a league that has allowed young men and adults to compete in the sport for more than 50 years. Mr. Pears, who shined in basketball during his high school career at Hickory as a member of the Hornets' first Class A League championship teams in 1941 and 1942, helped coach the Hickory junior varsity team from 1944-45. He played basketball in the military in 1946 and 1947 and went on to play in the Greenville Record-Argus League for seven years. But it was in baseball in which he made an indelible mark. He played baseball in the Pymatuning League, an independent circuit, from 1943-45. After his term of service, he returned to be part of the league. In 1948, Mr. Pears built a baseball field on Ball Park Road in Jefferson Township and started the Jefferson Township team. He served as a player/coach from 1948-92 and was president of the league from 1962-87, helping the league through some tough times. In 1972 he was named Coach of the Year by the league and oversaw the construction of a new field at Jefferson Township Park. Pears played his last game in 1990 at the age of 66. After open-heart surgery sidelined him from coaching for a season in 1991, he returned to help the team win the league championship in 1992. Over the years, his teams won 10 league titles and, until most recently, he continued single-handedly to maintain the ballfield. Many young players owed their development in the sport of baseball to Carl Pears. Mr. Pears was awarded Citizen of the Year in 1994 for Jefferson Township. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and bowling. His wife, the former Jean W. Stull, whom he married Oct. 21, 1950, survives at home. Also surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Daniel (Kathy) Hogan, Cranberry Township, Butler County; and Mrs. Gregory (Diane) Jarrett, Sharpsville; three sons, Kip E. Pears and his wife Shamcie, Plattsburg, N.Y.; Dale R. Pears and his wife Barbara, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; and Douglas C. Pears and his wife Hayley, Mercer; and one brother, Jack Pears, Hermitage. Mr. Pears also leaves nine grandchildren, Kip Pears Jr., Ryan and Lauren Pears, Kevin and Stephanie Hogan, Kyle and Cassidy Pears, and Brianna and Samantha Jarrett. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Helen Wheaton, Ruth Robb and Grayce Gaines; and one brother, Paul Pears.
