Today's obituaries Annie C. Robinson Ruth A.M.E. member was retiree of Sharon hospital Annie C. Robinson of 563 Brookfield Ave., Masury, formerly of 818 S. Oakland Ave., Sharon, departed this life at 7:40 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2003, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 78. Mrs. Robinson was born Jan. 20, 1925, in Saco, Ala., a daughter of Joseph and Annie Ford Jefferson. She came to the Sharon area more than 50 years ago. She had been employed as a dietary aide with Sharon Regional Health System for 11 years, retiring in 1991. As a member of Ruth African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Sharon, Mrs. Robinson was a former president of the choir and former member of the Missionary Society. She also formerly belonged to Sharon Community Choir. She was a life member of the Missionary Department of Akron District A.M.E. Zion Churches. She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, Edgar Robinson; six daughters, Regina Gibson, Las Vegas; Shirley Jefferson, Cleveland; Donna Heard, West Middlesex; Pamela Talbert, Sharon; Angela Ngoma, Youngstown; and Carmel Sanchez, Honolulu; a sister, Ruth Fair, Sharon; two brothers, Ralph Jefferson Sr., Wheatland; and Theodore Jefferson, Harrisville; six grandchildren, Ronata Neal, Ronald L. Gibson II., Rodney L. Gibson, Deirdre Baugh, Ontaya Sanchez and Danielle Sanchez; four great-grandchildren, Diamante Gibson, Ilissa-Marie Mauzy, Alexis Gibson and Kamryn Gibson; and a host of relatives and friends. Mrs. Robinson was preceded in death by her parents.
ROBINSON PFC James Robert Dillon Jr. USMC Marine was '02 GCHS grad, part of Big Brother program Private First Class James Robert Dillon Jr. USMC, 624 Flower Ave., Grove City, died on Thursday, March 13, 2003, in Kuwait. He was 19. James was born March 9, 1984, in Grove City to James Robert Dillon and Linda Kathleen Whalen. A 2002 alumnus of Grove City High School, he was involved with the high school audio-visual program and read daily announcements broadcast into each classroom. On Fridays, James prepared and read a top ten list, a light-hearted spoof patterned after David Letterman's comedy routine. He also was active in the Big Brother/Big Sister Program in Grove City. He graduated from the Marine Corps Boot Camp on Parris Island, S.C., in September 2002, and from Marine Basic Training in Camp Lejeune, N.C. James left for Kuwait on Feb. 15, 2003, from Camp Pendleton, Calif., and served as a perimeter guard with the Third Light Armored Battalion of the United States Marine Corps Headquarters Platoon. He was previously employed at Magoffin Inn, Mercer, and attended Church of the Beloved Disciple in Grove City. James was a regular blood donor. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, who will remember him for his sense of humor.
Surviving are: his father, Pittsburgh; his mother, Grove City; one sister, Lauren Mae Snyder, Grove City; and his grandparents, Francis E. "Skip" and Rose Marie Gladd Whalen, Grove City; and Donald and Dorothy Mitcheltree, Sheakleyville; four aunts, Janet L. Whalen Moore and her husband Thomas Moore, Jackson Center; Karen M. Whalen, Springfield, Va.; Sue Burk and her husband Chuck Burk, Mercer; and Sandy Melvin and her husband James Melvin, Greenville; two uncles, Michael P. Whalen and his wife Rebecca F. Whalen, Grove City; and Bill Dillon and his wife Lynn Dillon, Harrisville; and 11 cousins.
DILLON Edwin C. Campbell Jr. Stoneboro man was Reznor retiree, WWII vet Edwin C. Campbell Jr. of 20 Jones St., Stoneboro, died at 7:32 p.m. Monday (3-17-03) in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after a brief illness. He was 79. Mr. Campbell was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Kremis, Delaware Township, to Edwin C. and Martha E. Mowry Campbell. He attended Mercer schools. He retired in 1987 after 41 years of service from Reznor -- a unit of Thomas & Betts, Mercer. For many years, Mr. Campbell also worked for his brother-in-law, Walt Huey, at the Esso service station in what was Hickory. He was of the Protestant faith. He was a World War II veteran. He served as a gunners mate with the USS LCI. Mr. Campbell was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6345, Mercer; and American Legion Post 432, Wheatland. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved family gatherings and outings. He loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and always showed his support by attending all of their activities and sporting events. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He married Phyllis M. Shuffstall April 17, 1947. She survives at home. He is also survived by: two daughters, Mrs.. Dale W. (Linda) Chisholm, Sandy Lake; and Mrs. Keith G. (Cathy) Gadsby, Stoneboro; two sons, Edwin C. Campbell III and his wife Maxine, Stoneboro; and David M. Campbell and his wife Tamara, Stoneboro; four sisters, Dorothy Walters, Fredonia; Mrs. William (Shirley) Baker, West Middlesex; Joyce King and her companion, Bob Gallis, Cocoa, Fla.; and Mrs. Thomas (Betty) Sopher, Grove City; two brothers, Ralph M. Campbell, Mercer; and Robert L. Campbell and his wife Helen, Belleville, Ill.; 10 grandchildren, Sherah Kish and her fiance Mark Sontheimer, Stoneboro; Brent Campbell and his wife Mandy, Stoneboro; Jason Gadsby and his wife Cassie, Stoneboro; Justin Gadsby and his wife Jessica, Fredonia; Adam Gadsby and his wife Jennifer, Stoneboro; Timothy Gadsby, Stoneboro; Jamie Chisholm, Pittsburgh; Lauren Chisholm, Sandy Lake; Mindi Campbell, Stoneboro; and Cody Campbell, Stoneboro; and nine great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Kayla and Kristine Campbell; Gretchen Kish, Danielle Sontheimer; and Garrett and Grace Gadsby, all Stoneboro; and Cassidy and Julia Gadsby, Fredonia. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Nancy Jo Campbell; one brother, Donald Campbell; and one grandson-in-law, Charles A. Kish. CAMPBELL Dorothy Mae Reese Minor Mother and grandmother was respected by her family Dorothy Mae Reese Minor, 23 Pine Road, Springfield Township, died at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2003, in United Community Hospital, Pine Township. She was 92. Mrs. Minor was born Sept. 29, 1910, in Jamestown to Homer Reese and Ruth Wolford Reese. She was a member of Tower Presbyterian Church, Grove City; the London Grange; and the Willing Workers of the Grange. A homemaker, Mrs. Minor enjoyed spending time with and taking care of her children and grandchildren. Her husband, Paul J. Minor, whom she married Aug. 13, 1934, died Nov. 26, 1996. Surviving are: one son, James P. Minor and his wife Sandy, Grove City; one daughter, Linda and her husband Richard Nagel, both Fredonia; one son-in-law, Eugene Babos, Falls City, Wash.; one aunt, Ellen Gadsby, Grove City; and four grandsons, Dan Nagel, David Babos, Michael Babos and Paul James Minor.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Minor was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Martha Mae Babos, who died in 1993; one brother, George Reese; and four sisters, Blanche Helbig, Irene Harry, Virginia Augustine and Mary Reese.
E. Jean Palmer Hermitage woman retired as Sharon hospital clerk E. Jean Palmer, Hospitality Care Center, Hermitage, formerly of Esther Lane in Hermitage, died of natural causes at 7:40 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2003, in Hospitality Care Center after a brief illness. She was 72. Born Monday, Sept. 8, 1930, in Sharon, Mrs. Palmer was a daughter of the late Wilbert and Mary Ferguson Parton. She had worked as a clerk in the business office of Sharon Regional Health System for several years, retiring in 2002. Jean enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews and playing cards. She attended Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Hermitage. She is survived by: a daughter, Jamie Gallegos, Holbrook, Ariz.; a son, Stacy, husband of Jenifer Palmer, Fort Worth, Texas; and a brother, Merle Parton, Masury. She is also survived by five grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Nicholson and Florence Direnzo; a brother, Chester Parton; and a great-niece, Robin Leigh Kralevich. PALMER Cecil L. Carr Retired Shenango Inc. foreman was union official Cecil L. Carr, Bentley House, Garden Way, Hermitage, formerly of Madison Street, Hermitage, died of natural causes at 12 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2003, in Bentley House after a brief illness. He was 90. He was the widower of Mathilda C. Wasko Carr, whom he married July 12, 1941. She died Jan. 2, 1999. Born Sunday, April 21, 1912, in Kinsman, Mr. Carr was a son of the late Herbert and Phoebe Fitch Royal Carr. He had worked as a general foreman at the former Shenango Inc., Sharpsville, retiring in 1974 after 38 years of service. Cecil enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He was a past president of United Steelworkers of America AFL-CIO. Mr. Carr was of the Protestant faith. He is survived by: two daughters, Loraine C., wife of Don Greer, Mercer; and Linda J. Black, Brookfield; and a son, Vernon J., husband of Barbara Carr, Cortland. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Besides his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Rockwell and Eva Munger; and a brother, Vernon Carr. CARR Peter D. Tupper Packard retiree, Navy vet was Mason, scoutmaster YOUNGSTOWN -- Peter D. Tupper, formerly of Hartford, passed away at 12:35 a.m. Sunday, March 16, 2003, in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown. He was 69. Mr. Tupper was born June 26, 1933, in Orangeville, a son of William Raymond Tupper and Mazie Margarite Victor Tupper. He retired in 1991 as a manager in the Skilled Trades Department of Delphi Packard Electric Systems in Warren, Ohio, after 30 years of service. Mr. Tupper was a 1951 graduate of the former Vernon (Ohio) High School and was a Navy veteran, having served in the Korean conflict. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Youngstown. He also belonged to Free and Accepted Masons Jerusalem Lodge 19, Hartford; Royal Arch Masons Chapter 212, Kinsman; Royal and Select Masons Council 58, Warren, Ohio; Warren Commandery 39; and Knights Templar; and was a past advisor to the International Order of DeMolay in Warren and Youngstown. Mr. Tupper also was a former scoutmaster for Troop 90 in Hartford and for Troop 19 in Youngstown. He served as a Boy Scout district commissioner and had gone to Philmont, N.M., as a leader. He was an Ursuline High School band parent in Youngstown and was involved in "Dad, the Family Shepherd" and Promise Keepers Ministries. His survivors include: his wife, the former Patricia Jane Copley-Thompson, whom he married June 1, 1954; a daughter, Colleen Jane Miller and her husband Dr. Michael Miller, Little Rock, Ark.; three sons, Dr. Donald Tupper and his wife Suzanne, Coshocton, Ohio; Dr. Robert David Tupper and his wife Dr. Karen Tupper, Norfolk, Va.; and Dr. D'Wayne Scott Tupper and his wife Doreen, Portsmouth, Ohio; a great-aunt, Florence Tupper, Alexandria, Va.; and eight grandchildren, Michael Miller; Michalene "Micah" Miller; and Derek, Katie, Ian, Devin, Lili and Heidi Tupper. Mr. Tupper was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ethelene "Ep" Timms; and Sally Tygert; and six brothers, Alvin, William, Raymond, Harold and Robert Tupper; and Jay Meeker Jr. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home in his name to Boy Scout Troop 90, Hartford.

SIMPSON Hilda F. Sonk Hilda F. Sonk, 529 Brookfield Ave., Masury, formerly of Orangeville, died at 10:07 a.m. Tuesday (3-18-03) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 91. Obituary information was incomplete.
SONK Erma L. Harthan Ex-Hickory Grille owner belonged to Sharon church Former Hermitage businesswoman Erma L. Harthan, North Hermitage Road, Transfer, died at 5 p.m. Monday afternoon, March 17, 2003, in the Health Center of St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township, after a brief illness. She was 84. Mrs. Harthan was born Dec. 12, 1918, in Mercer, a daughter of the late George Popovitch and Mary Cameron Popovitch. She attended Hickory High School in Hermitage and was owner and operator of Hickory Grille, located on routes 18 and 518. Mrs. Harthan closed her business in 1987 to care for her daughter, Beverly Witzigman, who had multiple sclerosis. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sharon and was a coworker with Women of the Moose. She also supported Little League baseball in the Shenango Valley. Surviving are: a daughter-in-law, Joan Philips Stull, Burghill; two sisters, Mary Evelyn Popovitch, Greenville; and Dr. Georgiana Holman, wife of Vern Holman, Newport News, Va.; one brother, Virgil Popovitch, Greenville; and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Harthan was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Beverly, who died in 1996; her son, H.B. Stull Jr., who died in 1975 from injuries sustained in a fatality at the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant; and her husband, H.B. Stull, who died in 1965. William P. Stiger Retired company president was active in Mercer William P. Stiger, 450 Spruce Drive, Mercer, died at 11:39 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2003, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following an extended illness. He was 72. Mr. Stiger was born Sept. 19, 1930, in Pittsburgh to Paul J. Stiger and Thelma M. Sheridan Stiger. He was a graduate of New Wilmington High School. Previously employed at the former Stiger Construction Inc. in Mercer, Mr. Stiger worked for the company until his father passed away and then became president, until his retirement. He later worked part-time as a consultant with P.G. Construction. He spent four years in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Stiger was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Mercer; and was a first grand knight and member of Knights of Columbus Council 4270, Mercer. He was on the third degree team for three years with Grove City Council, winning three state championships. He helped with minor league youth baseball, was active in the Mercer Booster Club and was a park board member. Mr. Stiger loved building and flying model airplanes, and boating and hunting. He loved his family and his grandchildren. His wife, the former Joan K. Borowicz, whom he married April 16, 1955, survives at the residence. Surviving are: four sons, William Stiger and his wife Naomi, Mercer; Ronald Stiger and his wife Dana, Strasburg, Pa.; Paul Stiger; and Bruce Stiger and his wife Deborah, all Mercer; one sister, Cynthia, wife of Ernest "Skip" Barretta, Laverne, Calif.; and eight grandchildren, Nate, Billy, Caleb, Aidan, Shayne, Devin, Kory and Hannah Stiger. Mr. Stiger was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Thelma Miller, and a twin brother, Paul "Jim" Stiger.
