Regina I. 'Jean' Nych
Regina I. "Jean" Nych, 15 Nych Road, Lackawannock Township, died unexpectedly today (7-16-02) in Cleveland Clinic. She was 78.

Clifford L. Bestwick

Military retiree, POW fought in 3 wars, was truck driver

Clifford L. Bestwick, 446 Fairview Road, Fairview Township, died unexpectedly at 12:40 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2002, in his home. He was 72.

Mr. Bestwick was born April 27, 1930, in Jackson Center to Clifford H. Bestwick and Clara Isabelle Jones Bestwick.

He graduated from the former Stoneboro High School and retired in 1967 after 20 years from the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army, having served during three wars. Mr. Bestwick served in the Army during World War II and later reenlisted in the Navy and became a Navy Seal. He fought in the Korean conflict, the Bay of Pigs and in the Vietnam conflict. He was a prisoner-of-war in the Bay of Pigs and in Vietnam.

After retiring from the Navy, Mr. Bestwick became a truck driver and then retired.

He was a life member of American Legion Post 919, Fairview Township; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds.

His wife, the former Joyce Morris, whom he married Nov. 15, 1970, survives at home.

Also surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. James Kim (Wanda S.) Burke and Mrs. Tim (Patty A.) Newman, both Millen, Ga.; two sons, Bruce E. and his wife Lisa Price, Houston, Miss.; and Roy E. Price, Pittsburgh; two sisters, Ann Dowd, Metter, Ga.; and Ethel Bestwick, Youngstown; a brother, Robert Bestwick, Meadville; and six grandchildren, Brett Burke, Brandy Kirkland, Meghan Burke, Niki Price, Kadie Newman and Macy Price.

Mr. Bestwick was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty M. Coon; and one brother, Edward Bestwick.

Caroline E. Davis

Retired courthouse custodian had been cook at MHS

Caroline E. Davis, 435 N. Broad St., Grove City, formerly of 316 S. Shenango St., Mercer, died at 10:23 p.m. Monday, July 15, 2002, in Grove Manor, Grove City, after an extended illness. She was 95.

Mrs. Davis was born July 26, 1906, in Presto, Allegheny County, to John W. Eickenberg and Anna Herra Eickenberg.

She retired from the custodial department of Mercer County Courthouse and previously worked as a cook at Mercer High School.

Mrs. Davis was of the Methodist faith.

Her husband, Paul W. Davis, whom she married Oct. 11, 1927, died Sept. 25, 1988.

Surviving are: two daughters, Lorene E., wife of W. John "Jack" Peters, Mercer; and Shirley A., wife of Norman Paxton, Lakeland, Fla.; a sister, Anna Owen, Madeira Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Betty Hammerlee, Dorothy Merlino, Margaret Woods and Helen Eilers; and five brothers, John, William, George, Theodore and Harry Eickenberg.
