Today's obituaries Richard Frank Carnino GATX retired welder was avid bowler, WWII veteran A funeral service will be held Saturday for Richard Frank Carnino, a resident of White-Cliff Nursing home, Hempfield Township, and formerly of 1001 Negley St., Farrell; and Clark. He passed away at 8:25 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, due to congestive heart failure. He was 87. Born Sept. 29, 1914, in Prudence, Tenn., Mr. Carnino was a son of the late John and Lucy LeVrangi Carnino. A 1933 graduate of Sharon High School, he retired in 1980 from General American Transportation Corp.'s former Masury plant as a welder. Previously he had worked at the former Wellman Theatre in Girard, Ohio, as a projectionist. At one time, he and his brother owned and operated the former Haywood Hotel in Farrell. Mr. Carnino was of the Catholic faith and enjoyed playing cards and watching sports on television, particularly baseball, basketball and football. He also enjoyed watching old cowboy movies on TV. He was an avid bowler who, in his Classic League, won the Steve Steh Award in 1988. He and his brothers, who all worked for GATX, formed a bowling team there. Mr. Carnino carried a 200 average in bowling for most of his life. Mr. Carnino was a veteran of World War II, having served with the Merchant Marines. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. On June 11, 1938, he married the former Grace Kathleen Price. She preceded him in death May 13, 2001. Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Timothy C. (Sherri L.) Jablon, Transfer; one brother, Eugene Carnino and his wife Shirley, Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Mrs. Richard (Leanne M.) Rose, Sharpsville; Mrs. David (Kimberly J.) Ponzurick; and Robert P. Carnino, all Hermitage; four great-grandchildren, Michelle and Steven Rose, both Sharpsville; and David and Michael Ponzurick, both Hermitage; and one great-great-granddaughter, Hailey Rose, Sharpsville. In addition to his parents and his wife, Mr. Carnino was preceded in death by one son, Robert A. Carnino; three brothers, Premo, Louis and Ernest Carnino; and one infant granddaughter. CARNINO Lois D. Caszatt Homemaker was member of Eagles, VFW auxiliaries A funeral service will be held Saturday for Lois D. Caszatt of 15 W. Connelly Blvd., Sharon. She passed away Wednesday (8-14-02) in her residence. She was 88. Born Oct. 18, 1913, in West Middlesex, she was a daughter of the late Thomas L. and Edna A. Baer Likens. Mrs. Caszatt attended the former Battle Row School House in West Middlesex. She was a homemaker and a member and past worthy president of the Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 327, Sharon. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1338, also Sharon. On June 27, 1930, she married Louis R. Caszatt. He preceded her in death April 28, 1994. Survivors include: four sons, Alvin G. Caszatt and his wife, Connie, Sharon; Louis R. Caszatt and his wife, Meri, Elverta, Calif.; William M. Caszatt and his wife, Vincy, Sharpsville; and Joseph P. Caszatt and his wife, Ann, Hermitage; one sister, Ida "Midge" Gawne, Mercer; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas L. and Everett L. Caszatt; six sisters, Caroline L. Likens, Nancy A. Redmond, Julia M. Boles, Betty I. Meszaros, Thelma E. Likens and Edna A. Meszaros; and four brothers, Labanna H., Thurman P., Clayton L. and Marvin I. Likens.
CASZATT Alice Mae Shannon Former Farrell homemaker belonged to Valley Baptist A funeral service will be held Tuesday for Alice Mae Shannon of 275 Sterling Ave., Apartment B 101, Sharon, formerly of 508 Wallis Ave. in Farrell. She passed away at 4:32 a.m. Thursday (8-15-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 85. Mrs. Shannon was born Jan. 23, 1917, in Cheraw, S.C., a daughter of Samuel B. Lee and Elizabeth Cutner Lee. She lived in the Shenango Valley since 1937. During World War II, Mrs. Shannon worked at General American Transportation Corp.'s former Masury plant. She was a member of Valley Baptist Church in Farrell. A homemaker, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Surviving are: her husband, Jeff Shannon, at home; one son, Wilbert L. Shannon and his wife Bernice L. Shannon, Wheatland; three grandchildren, Mavis C. Shannon, wife of Timothy Odem, Sharon; Wilbert L. Shannon Jr., Farrell; and Morgan L. Shannon and his wife Sherri, North Charleston, S.C.; three great-grandchildren, Arthur, Brittni and Teresa; two great-great-grandsons, Arthur J. and Noah C.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. Mrs. Shannon was preceded in death by her parents; and several sisters and brothers.
SHANNON Robert J. Zorzi Decorated WWII vet was city retiree, active in baseball A funeral Mass will be held Saturday for Robert J. Zorzi of Cordia Commons at the Shenango Inn, 1330 Kimberly Road, Sharon, formerly of Hadley Drive in Sharon. He passed away at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 95. Born Jan. 19, 1907, in Rilton, Pa., Mr. Zorzi was a son of the late Anthony and Lodovina Zorzi. Educated in Rilton, Mr. Zorzi moved to the Shenango Valley in the late 1920s. He retired from the City of Sharon Street Department in 1972, where he had worked for 15 years. He previously had been employed at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.; the former Taylor Winfield Co., Warren, Ohio; and the former National Castings Division of Midland-Ross Corp., Sharon. He was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon and belonged to North Sharon Volunteer Fire Department. Earlier in life, Bob was a standout baseball player, having been a member of several different teams in the area. He also coached Little League in Sharon. Mr. Zorzi was a decorated war veteran who served with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II in the European theater, including participation in the invasion at Omaha Beach on D-day. On Oct. 26, 1940, he married the former Mary M. Masters. She preceded him in death Sept. 22, 1999. Survivors include: two sons, Thomas R. Zorzi and his wife Mary Ann; and James F. Zorzi and his wife Karen, all Hermitage; one sister, Emma Slabe, Masury; two sisters-in-law, Nettie Zorzi, Sharon; and Marie Zorzi, Fremont, Calif.; four grandchildren, Thomas Zorzi Jr. and his wife Sally; Mrs. Brian (Tina) Knapp; Brian Zorzi and his wife Lynette; and Mrs. Dan (Amy) Newbert; six great-grandchildren, Tommy, Alyssa, Leah, Alaina, Paige and Ashley; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Eugene, Henry and Leno Zorzi; and two sisters, Flora Pacora and Agnes Renschigai. ZORZI Mario J. 'Red' Gaspari WWII Air Force vet retired from Sharon Westinghouse A funeral service will be today for Mario J. "Red" Gaspari of 226 Edgewood Drive, Transfer. He died of natural causes at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, in White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township, after a brief illness. He was 82. Mr. Gaspari was born Dec. 7, 1919, in Bonomi, Italy, to Arturo Gaspari and Maria Maccagnan Gaspari. The 1938 Sharon High School alumnus was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He received the Good Conduct Medal and American Theater Ribbon. Mr. Gaspari retired in 1982 after 42 years with the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he was a group leader. He was of the Catholic faith. Mr. Gaspari was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds; and Italian Home Club, Greenville. He enjoyed bowling, golf, fishing and especially gardening. His wife, the former Florence H. Lenzi, whom he married May 10, 1951, died Jan. 15, 1988. Surviving are: three daughters, Patricia Urey, Mercer; Rina Gaspari, Charlottesville, Va.; and Mrs. Tim (Laura) Hanke, Denver; one son, Keith Gaspari and his wife Linda, Greenville; one sister, Rita King, Florida; one brother, Bruno Gaspari, California; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Mr. Gaspari was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
GASPARI Lynn M. Hopson '76 FHS grad served in Army Reserves, was nurse's aide A funeral service will be held Saturday for Lynn M. Hopson, 1222 Washington St., Farrell. She passed away at 10:43 p.m. Tuesday (8-13-02) in UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident Aug. 6, 2002. She was 44. Lynn was born March 15, 1958, in Sharon. An alumna of Farrell High School Class of 1976, she was a nurse's aide for several years at UPMC Horizon, Greenville. Lynn was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves, having served for 15 years in the military, including as a participant in Operation Desert Storm. Surviving are: two daughters, Sherisse Hopson and Alicia Hopson, both at home; two aunts, Sarah R. Hopson, Farrell; and Beverly Norris, Masury; two brothers, James Lee Hopson Jr., Youngstown; and David Hopson, Hermitage; one sister, Minister Cherri Brown, Phoenix, Ariz.; and a host of cousins and friends. Lynn was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Alice "Bootsie" Hopson.
HOPSON Eleanor Furlan Ketnick Lifelong Wheatland resident belonged to U.M. church Private funeral services will be held Monday for Eleanor Furlan Ketnick, a lifelong resident of 136 Chestnut St., Wheatland. She passed away at 4:47 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 14, 2002, in her residence following a long illness. She was 75. Born July 13, 1927, in her home on Chestnut Street, Mrs. Ketnick was a daughter of the late Cyril M. and Franceska Balic Furlan. Mrs. Ketnick was a 1945 graduate of Farrell High School and also graduated from the former Shenango Valley Commercial Institute. Earlier in life, she worked in Farrell High School as a secretary to the superintendent of schools and at the former Whitmer-Smith's department store in Sharon as a clerk in their offices. She was a member of the Wheatland-Farrell United Methodist Church. To Eleanor, her family, of whom she was very proud, always came first. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her kind and compassionate spirit came through to anyone in need, as she was always willing to lend a hand. Eleanor was a loving, gentle, fair and nonjudgmental person. She enjoyed anything to do with nature, as well as painting, gardening, traveling and dancing. She was a proud homemaker, gourmet cook and an avid reader. Survivors include: her husband, Jake Ketnick, whom she married Feb. 17, 1949; one daughter, Mrs. Russell (Karen L.) Holley, Columbia, Md.; one son, David J. Ketnick and his wife Janis Taylor, San Antonio; one sister, Zora (Furlan) Patrick, Girard, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Sarah Holley, Laurel, Md.; and Stephanie and Benjamin Ketnick, Fort Walton Beach, Fla. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Herman Furlan. KETNICK Alfred Mitchell Alfred Mitchell, 340 Malleable St., Sharon, died at 2:21 p.m. Thursday (8-15-02) in his home. He was 69. Obituary information was incomplete.
MITCHELL Paula Ann Palmer Sharon High alumna was former model, vocalist Paula Ann Palmer, 3152 Main St., West Middlesex, died at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after an extended illness. She was 51. Mrs. Palmer was born Aug. 29, 1950, in Sharon to Edward and Eleanor Zagger Evans. She was a homemaker and member of West Middlesex Presbyterian Church. The alumna of Sharon High School Class of 1968 was a member of the school choir, participating as a soloist. Mrs. Palmer was a former clothing model and an accomplished vocalist. Her performances ranged from early youth pageants to tours with the Markic-Zagger Band to a televised Public Broadcasting Systemappearance. She was an avid antique collector, craftmaker and animal proponent. She was an immensely loving wife and mother who will be deeply missed. Her first husband, Alfred B. Gibbons, whom she married Jan. 5, 1974, died Nov. 25, 1981, in a mid-air plane collision. Surviving are: her second husband, Timothy Palmer, whom she married Aug. 23, 1985, at home in West Middlesex; one son, Patrick Gibbons, Atlanta; one sister, Elaine Evans, Mercer; and her father, also Mercer. PALMER Kenneth R. Richards Jr. '56 Sharon grad was school board member, Dem officer Kenneth R. Richards Jr., Masury, formerly of 103 White Ave., Sharon, passed away at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, in Orange Village Care Center, Masury. He was 63. Mr. Richards was born Jan. 22, 1939, in Sharon, a son of Kenneth Richards Sr. and Agnes Fox Richards. A graduate of Sharon High School Class of 1956, Mr. Richards attended Youngstown State University for three years. He was a draftsman for six years with Miller Industries on Swamp Road in Hermitage and previously worked for 20 years for Sharpsville Steel Fabricating. Mr. Richards was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Sharon and served on Sharon school board for 13 years, having been a former president and vice president. He also served as the treasurer at one time for the Sharon Democratic Party and was a member of the Sharon Recreation Board. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Richards enjoyed spending time with his family. He served with the U.S. Army Reserves and was an avid runner. Surviving are: his wife, the former Rosemary Arendas, whom he married May 12, 1962; one daughter, Mrs. Barry (Lynn Marie) Schwartz, Buffalo Grove, Ill.; a son, Kenneth M. Richards and his wife Caroline, Columbus, Ohio; his stepmother, Winifred Richards, Canfield, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Fred (Sally) Koepke, St. Petersburg, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Sam, Jacob, Holly and Emily. Mr. Richards was preceded in death by his parents. RICHARDS Mary K. Sanata St. Joe's member was retired country club bookkeeper A funeral Mass will be held Monday for Mary K. Sanata of 515 Ridge Ave., Sharpsville. She passed away at 3:50 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, in her residence following a brief illness. She was 79. Born June 25, 1923, in Sharon, Mrs. Sanata was a daughter of the late John and Anna Szakach Erimias. A lifelong area resident, she was a 1942 alumna of Sharon High School. She also attended the former Sharon Commercial Institute. Mrs. Sanata retired in 1998 from Sharon Country Club, where she had been a bookkeeper for nearly 40 years. She previously had been employed at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Church, Sharon. A loving and devoted mother and grandmother, she enjoyed being with her family, particularly attending her grandchildren's scholastic and academic affairs. On Jan. 27, 1945, she married her first husband, Samuel Brant. He passed away May 1, 1953. On Feb. 16, 1957, she married her second husband, Anthony "Tony" A. Sanata. He passed away June 9 of this year. Survivors include: two daughters, Sherry Stevens, wife of John Stevens, Sharon; and Patricia Brant, Lodi, Calif.; one son, Robert Brant, Wellsboro, Pa.; two sisters, Ann McCuskey, Hermitage; and Ethel Reynolds, Sharon; one brother, Frank Erimias and his wife Helen, Sharpsville; and five grandchildren, Jonathan and Tara Stevens; and Jennie, Laura and Robbie Brant. TOTH Mary Butala Williams Former Sacred Heart church member lived in California VISTA, Calif. -- Mary Butala Williams, Vista, formerly of 296 Grant St., Sharon, passed away July 4, 2002, in Pleasant Care Nursing Home, Vista, following a two-year illness. She was 84. Mary was born in Warren, Ohio, on Dec. 29, 1918. She was married to Anthony Butala, her first husband of 25 years. He passed away in 1967. She later married Leo Williams in 1973. He died in 1999. Mary worked for the Laura Scudder Co. in Fullerton, Calif., retiring in 1982. She was a former member of Church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon and moved to California in 1969. Mary is survived by: her son, Anthony "Tony" "Jocco" Butala, Vista; her daughter, Rosemary DeSantis, wife of Samuel "Sam" DeSantis, Fallbrook, Calif.; and her grandchildren, Christine Dominguez, Theresa Dalton, Tony DeSantis and Joseph "Joe" DeSantis, all of the San Diego area; as well as a sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and William Anderson in West Farmington, Ohio. She also has four great-grandchildren, Cherise, Brianna and Cole Dalton; and Andre Dominguez. Private family services were held July 25, 2002, in California.
