Dr. Russell M. Wright Retired sports physician was SRU benefactor BOCA RATON, Fla. -- A funeral service will be held Saturday for Dr. Russell M. Wright, D.O., 1901 S. Ocean Blvd., Del Ray Beach, Fla. 33483, formerly of Jackson Center and Bloomfield Hills, Mich. He died at 11:05 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in Boca Raton Community Hospital. He was 98. Dr. Wright was born June 9, 1904, in Jackson Center to Alexander Wright and Katherine Klingensmith Wright. He grew up in Mercer County. A retired physician, Dr. Wright graduated from what was Slippery Rock State Normal School in 1923 with a bachelor's degree in education, and went on to graduate from Des Moines Still College of Osteopathy and Surgery in 1929. He also played football at Still College of Osteopathy. He completed his internship at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital and a second internship in special surgery in Vienna, Austria. Dr. Wright's lists of accomplishments include serving as emeritus team physician for the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Pistons. He also earned an honorary doctorate of philosophy from Slippery Rock University. He was a member of the Sports Hall of Fame for U.S. Weight Lifting Federation, Michigan Amateur Athletic Association and Slippery Rock University. He was president of Michigan Sport Sages and the Medical Committee for the International Federation of Weight Lifting. The author of "The Making of an Olympic Champion" and "One Man's Journey from Slippery Rock" attended 17 world weight lifting championships worldwide, including in Sweden, Moscow, Warsaw, France, East Germany, West Germany, Budapest, Tehran, Peru, Gettysburg, Manila, Havana, Slovenia, Yugoslavia and Columbus, Ohio. He also attended five Olympic games in Tokyo, 1964; Mexico, 1968; Munich, 1972; Montreal, 1976; and Los Angeles, 1984. He was emeritus president of American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (AOASM) and recipient of AOASM's Fellow Award. As a philanthropist for his support of Slippery Rock University and the AOASM, Dr. Wright funded the Russell Wright Fitness Center and the Russell Wright Alumni House at Slippery Rock University, as well as the Russell M. Wright Endowed Lecture at the AOASM Clinical Conference. He was of the United Methodist faith. His first wife, the former Dorothy Virginia Gay, whom he married June 5, 1929, died Sept. 22, 1980. His second wife, the former Rose Bauervic, whom he married in March 1981, died in June of this year. Surviving are: two daughters, Gay Vela, Del Ray Beach; and Katherine Willoughby, Highlands, N.C.; a son, Dr. Richard A. Wright, New York, N.Y.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Besides his first and second wives, he was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Helen E. Mossford. WRIGHT Gertrude L. Snyder Retired school bus driver was league bowler SHARON -- Gertrude L. Snyder, St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Sandy Lake, died at 11:10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. She was 83. Mrs. Snyder was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Sandy Lake Township to Elmer L. and Ida May Hart Jewell. She attended the former Lytle School in Sandy Lake Township. Mrs. Snyder retired from Garrett's Garage, Hermitage, in 1983 after 15 years of service as a school bus driver. She was of the Protestant faith. She was a very good bowler and had been active in local leagues. She loved to bake and enjoyed spending time with her family. Mrs. Snyder was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack P. Clarke, whom she married April 7, 1935. Her second husband, Arthur P. Snyder, whom she married April 27, 1939, preceded her in death May 4, 1979. She is survived by: three daughters, Mrs. Anthony F. "Tony" (Pearl) Knott, Mercer; Mrs. Duane (Patricia) Mohney, Ebensburg, Pa.; and Mrs. Stanley (Betty) Knauff, Grove City; nine grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and nine stepgreat-grandchildren. Besides her two husbands, Mrs. Snyder was preceded in death by one son, Arthur Normin Snyder Jr.; five brothers and one sister. Margaret Elizabeth Deitrick George Worth Twp. homemaker was U.M. church member Margaret Elizabeth Deitrick George, 65-year resident of 914 Millbrook Road, Worth Township, died at 3:50 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, in her residence after becoming ill in January of this year. She was 88. Mrs. George was born Oct. 31, 1913, in Elimsport, Pa., to Raymond Deitrick and Bessie May Schooley Deitrick. A homemaker, she was a member of Schofield United Methodist Church, Millbrook, and its Ladies Missionary group. Mrs. George also belonged to Pennsylvania Farmers Association. She enjoyed quilting. Surviving are: her husband, Mervin W. George, whom she married June 8, 1935, at home; three children, Mrs. Harry P. (Jean E.) Rearick, New Castle; Sara M. "Sally" McCullough, Mercer; and John W. George, husband of Judy, Jackson Center; one sister, Sarah Mae Walls Sankey, Grove City; 10 grandchildren, Thomas Rearick, Robert Rearick, Joseph Rearick, John McCullough, David McCullough, Cathy Watts, John George Jr., Avis George, Terry Perry and William McGrew; and 16 great-grandchildren. Mrs. George was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, William S. Deitrick and John L. Deitrick; and one grandson, William Charles George. GEORGE Ardis J. Doan Former Hubbard woman was retired school teacher Ardis J. Doan, formerly of Hubbard, died at 3:10 p.m. Monday afternoon (10-21-02) in John XXIII Home, Hermitage. She was 87. Mrs. Doan was born May 13, 1915, in Wayland, Ohio, a daughter of Evan R. and Harriet Ann Jenkins Jones. Ardis was a teacher for the Hubbard public school system for 23 years, retiring in 1977. She was a member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Lackawannock Township. Her husband, Charles R. Doan, whom she married Oct. 17, 1936, died Jan. 13, 1997. She leaves: two sons, Robert L. Doan, Clinton, N.C.; and Thomas E. Doan, Greenville; two daughters, Judith A. Beck, New Bedford; and Carolyn R. Lang, West Middlesex; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Besides her husband, her parents, one brother and one sister are deceased. DOAN John F. 'Fred' Lucas Jr. Coolspring Twp. man was rail worker, Vietnam vet A memorial service will be held Thursday for John F. "Fred" Lucas Jr., 1199 N. Perry Highway, Coolspring Township. He died at 8:35 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following a period of failing health. He was 53. Mr. Lucas was born April 11, 1949, in Mercer, a son of John F. and Jean Kasbee Lucas. On June 11, 1982, he married Rebecca J. Shearer, who survives. Mr. Lucas was employed as the crew clerk for Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad in Greenville. He was a member of Fredonia United Methodist Church; and the Jamestown Fireman's Club. Having served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era, Mr. Lucas was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars James O. Jordan Post 3374 in Hempfield Township. Besides his wife, he is survived by: his mother, Jean Lucas, Fredonia; his stepmother, Rowena Lucas, Nokomis, Fla.; two sons, Shawn Christian Lucas, Mercer; and Cody Ryan Lucas, Mercer; a brother, Paul Lucas, Fredonia; a stepsister, Cheryl Martin, Florida; a stepbrother, Brian Clark, also Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Lucas was preceded in death by his father.
LUCAS Kathryn J. Watts Kathryn J. Watts, 9 Penn Ave., Greenville, died at 8:25 a.m. Tuesday (10-22-02) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. She was 76. Obituary information was incomplete.
WATTS Ashley A. Bryan Ashley A. Bryan, 1957 Pine Hollow Blvd., Hermitage, died of natural causes at 9:52 a.m. Tuesday (10-22-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 13. Obituary information was incomplete.
