Caroline Madasz Dell
Homemaker worked with first husband in funeral home

Caroline Madasz Dell, of 7291 Oakwood Drive, Brookfield, died at 7:20 p.m. Friday (6-07-02) at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngs-town. She was 75.

Mrs. Dell was born Aug. 9, 1926, in Wadsworth, Ohio, a daughter of Alexander and Caroline Szalai Zoltai.

She was a 1943 graduate of Elyria (Ohio) High School.

Caroline was a homemaker and had worked with her first husband, John Madasz Jr., in Madasz Funeral Home for 35 years.

Her memberships included Brookfield United Methodist Church; Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 518, Hartford; and the Wednesday Luncheon Club.

Caroline's first husband, whom she married June 22, 1946, died Aug. 14, 1991. She is survived by her second husband, George J. Dell, whom she married April 30, 1995.

Other survivors include two sons, John Madasz III and his wife, Jill, Brookfield; and Larry R. Madasz and his wife Lou Ann, Brookfield; a daughter, Diane C. Madison, San Leandro, Calif.; three brothers, William Zoltai, Venice Fla.; and Elmer Zoltai and Zoltan Zoltai, both Elyria, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Jason, Jessica and Jeremy Madasz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Anthony, Alex and Alfred Zoltai; and a sister, Helen Barr.

Violet V. Hagen Moon

Greenville senior center aide was UCH volunteer

Violet V. Hagen Moon, Coolspring Township, formerly of Mercer RD 5 and Mercer Manor, died at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2002, in Woodland Place, Coolspring Township, following an extended illness. She was 77.

Mrs. Moon was born Aug. 16, 1924, in Bakerstown, Pa., to John L. Hagen and Magdalena A. Eltscher Hagen.

She was employed as an aide to the director of the senior center in Greenville. Mrs. Moon was also a file clerk from 1943 to 1951 at what became Cooper Energy Services Reciprocating Products in Grove City.

She was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Mercer.

Mrs. Moon was a former volunteer at United Community Hospital, Pine Township.

Her husband, James H. Moon Jr., whom she married Jan. 16, 1953, died Nov. 21, 1983.

Surviving are: a son, Douglas Moon and his wife Gail, Greenville; and two sisters, Fern Jacobson, Sun Prairie, Wis.; and Rosie Cory, Meadville.

Joseph Gotal

Croatia native, ex-Farrell man was Westinghouse retiree

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Joseph Gotal of 4013 Woodstock Road, Rocky Mount, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2002, in LifeCare Hospitals of North Carolina. He was 79.

Born Oct. 28, 1922 in Ivorec, Croatia, he immigrated to Farrell with his parents, Isador and Teresa Gotal.

He graduated from Farrell High School in 1941 and served as a corporal in the Army Air Force 1504 during World War II. Mr. Gotal then received a bachelor's degree in engineering from Youngstown State University in 1951.

He dedicated 44 years to Westinghouse Corp., both in the Sharon Transformer Division and the Pinetops, N.C., LVIT Division, retiring on June 1, 1988.

Joseph was an avid fisherman, model plane enthusiast and amateur astronomer. He was a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 1038 in Rocky Mount.

Surviving are: his wife of 52 years, the former Lois R. Farringer; his son, John D. Gotal and his wife Barbara Jane, Framingham, Mass.; four daughters, Jennifer Ilene Pillar and her husband Charles, Fayetteville, N.Y.; Ruth Ann Leggette and her husband Lathan, Greenville, N.C.; Joann Mary Freitas and her husband Stephen, North Easton, Mass.; and Barbara Jean Campagna and her husband Jay, Davenport, Iowa; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mary F. 'Mamie' Wilcox

Former local woman was member of Central Christian

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Mary F. "Mamie" Wilcox, Elkins, Ark., formerly of Hermitage and West Middlesex, died of natural causes Friday morning, June 7, 2002, in Washington Regional Hospital after an extended illness. She was 95.

She was the widow of George W. "Mose" Wilcox, who died Aug. 21, 1986. They were married Sept. 29, 1927.

Born Oct. 27, 1906, in Sharon, Mrs. Wilcox was a daughter of the late Joseph and Minnie Shaffer Hoch.

She was a member of Central Christian Church in Hermitage.

She enjoyed playing cards.

Mrs. Wilcox was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed.

She is survived by: a daughter, Loretta Thurman, Elkins; and twin sons, Roy R. Wilcox, Hermitage; and Raymond A. Wilcox, West Middlesex. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Wilcox was preceded in death by a daughter, Delores Wilcox; and two brothers, William and Joseph A. Hoch.

Memorial contributions may be made to the 55 Plus Program of Washington Regional Hospital in care of L. Thurman, 297 N. Center St., Elkins, AR 72727.

Raymond Lenkner Sr.

Marines vet was retired truck driver, barber in Grove City

A funeral service will be held Wednesday for Raymond Lenkner Sr., 402 Union St., Grove City. He died at 12:36 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2002, in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after a two-month illness. He was 66.

Mr. Lenkner was born March 11, 1936, in Grove City to Henry Lamont "Mont" Lenkner and Thelma Katherine Gribble Lenkner.

He married Peggy Mock on Feb. 14, 1987.

A retired truck driver with Calcium Chloride Sales of Grove City, Mr. Lenkner also was a barber for 20 years at the former Lenkner Garner Barber Shop on South Broad Street in Grove City.

He was of the Methodist faith.

Mr. Lenkner was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 1579 in Grove City, where he was a past exalted ruler.

Surviving are: his wife, Peggy, at home; three children, Raymond Lenkner and his wife Cindy, Grove City; Eric L. Lenkner and his wife Dawn, Cochranton; and Keith L. Lenkner and his wife Melinda, Grove City; three stepchildren, Thomas R. Turner and his wife Melissa, Grove City; Terra Ann Turner, Sandy Lake; and Joshua J. Turner, also Grove City; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Esther E. Lenkner; one half brother, Robert F. Lenkner; and one half sister, Christean Jack.

Anthony 'Tony' A. Sanata

Decorated WWII vet was WE retiree, local Hall of Famer

Anthony "Tony" A. Sanata, John XXIII Home, Hermitage, formerly of 515 Ridge Ave., Sharpsville, passed away at 10:45 a.m. Sunday (6-9-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 79.

Born July 18, 1922, in Sharon, he was a son of the late Angelo and Margaret Rotunno Sanata.

Tony was a 1942 graduate of Sharon High School, where he excelled in football, baseball and golf. His high school football career showed him to be an outstanding passer, punter and kicker. He was offered a tryout with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1947.

In golf, he held a 2-handicap and was one of the "long ball" hitters of the area, placing in several tournaments.

Sanata played American Legion baseball from 1939 through 1941 and was named most valuable player in the 1940-1941 season. He signed a professional contract with the Erie Sailors of the Mid-Atlantic League in 1941, but World War II shortened his career. He went to the Army in 1942 and played on the Fort Bragg all-star team against former professionals. He pitched two games against the pros, allowing only three hits and striking out 33 batters.

In 1946 after the war, he signed with the Philadelphia Athletics, but did not report because of an arm injury. He played in the Cotton League for Vicksburg, Miss., in 1947, but another injury ended his career.

Tony was inducted into the Mercer County Hall of Fame in 1988.

He retired in 1984 as a fitter from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he had been employed for nearly 40 years.

He was an active member of St. Bartholomew Church, Sharpsville, and its Holy Name Society. He was also a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6404, Sharpsville. A decorated U.S. Army World War II veteran, he served as a medic in the European theater of operations and was a recipient of the European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

A devoted grandfather, Tony attended all of his grandchildren's scholastic and academic events. He was also very close with his brothers and sisters and cherished his entire family.

Survivors include: his wife, the former Mary Erimias Brant, whom he married Feb. 16, 1957; two daughters, Sherry Stevens, wife of John Stevens, Sharon; and Patricia Brant, Lodi, Calif.; one son, Robert Brant, Wellsboro, Pa.; two sisters, Mrs. Samuel (Marie) Testani and Mrs. David (Rosemary) Moses, both Hermitage; five brothers, Albert Sanata and his wife, Ellen, Brookfield; Lawrence Sanata and his wife, Marge, Clark; Harry Sanata and his wife, Josephine, Hubbard; Charles Sanata and his wife, Hazel, Hermitage; and William Sanata, Pueblo, Colo.; and five grandchildren, Jonathan and Tara Stevens; and Jennie, Laura and Robbie Brant.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Peter Peluso; one stepsister, Victoria Donak; and three stepbrothers, Joseph, Peter and James Peluso.

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Margaret D'Angelo of 126 Pinnacle Point Drive, Lancaster, formerly of Masury, died at 10:15 a.m. Saturday (6-8-02) in her residence. She was 91.

Mrs. D'Angelo was born July 20, 1910, in United, Pa., a daughter of Endi G. and Julia Telepak Kohut.

Mrs. D'Angelo was a homemaker.

Her memberships included St. Bernadette's Church, Masury; and St. Richards Catholic Church, Manheim, Pa.

Her husband, Gabriel D'Angelo, whom she married Aug. 10, 1940, died April 15, 1983.

Survivors include: one son, Gabriel D'Angelo Jr., Farrell; one daughter, Bernadette D'Angelo, Lancaster; one sister, Veronica Sikon, Pittsburgh; two brothers, Joseph Kohut, Vicenza, Italy; and Michael Kohut, New Jersey; and five grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. D'Angelo was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Kevin D'Angelo; three brothers, Steve Kohut, Andrew Kohut and John Kohut; and four sisters, Anna Pazich, Mary Amica, Bertha Scarmach and Elizabeth Ciccone.

Westinghouse retiree was Fatima church member

Lawrence R. Palanti, 940 Emerson Ave., Farrell, died of natural causes at 3:05 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 86.

Mr. Palanti was born Dec. 24, 1915, in Farrell to Anthony Palanti and Rose Necaster Palanti.

He retired in 1981 after 36 years as a machinist for the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

Mr. Palanti was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell.

He was an avid horse racing fan and enjoyed carpentry.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Aurelia M. Dragonire, whom he married Nov. 10, 1942, at home; a son, Lawrence Palanti Jr., Westminster, Md.; a daughter, Lorainne Guerino, wife of James, Farrell; and five grandchildren, Gianna, Jason, Justin, Jordan and John-Michael Guerino.

Mr. Palanti was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Anthony, Carmen, Nunzio, Joseph and William Palanti; and two sisters, Jennie Nicastro and Angeline Salerno.

Frank Richard 'Goose' Williams

Born in Argentina, South Py man owned grocery store

Frank Richard "Goose" Williams, 2102 Buckeye Drive, South Pymatuning Township, died at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday (6-5-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 89.

Mr. Williams was born Aug. 8, 1912, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Joseph Williams and Theresa Trolio Williams.

He was owner for more than 50 years of Frank Williams Grocery store in South Pymatuning Township.

Mr. Williams was a member of St. Bartholomew's Church in Sharpsville.

Surviving are: a sister, Elizabeth Clark, Hermitage; and nieces and nephews.

Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Victoria Rose; and two brothers, James Williams and Fred Giocolo.

Bernard A. 'Ben' Manilla

Westinghouse retiree owned shop in Sharon with wife

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday for Bernard A. "Ben" Manilla of 765 Fisher Hill, Sharon. He passed away unexpectedly Saturday (6-8-02) in Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital. He was 76.

Born July 14, 1925, in Sharon, he was a son of the late Louis and Maria DePasquale Manilla.

He attended Sacred Heart Parochial Grade School in Sharon and was a 1943 alumnus of Sharon High School. He also took drafting classes at Youngstown State University.

Ben retired in 1984 as a customer service representative from Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he was employed for 40 years. At the time of his death, he and his wife owned and operated Bennie's Comics and Sports Card Shop on Sharpsville Avenue in Sharon.

He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon; and North Sharon Volunteer Fire Department. A sports enthusiast, he was a Little League and American Legion baseball coach and manager for many years. He also sponsored numerous girls basketball and boys baseball teams.

Devoted to his family, he and his wife enjoyed traveling to see them as often as possible.

Survivors include: his wife, the former Mary E. Lombardo, at home; two daughters, Anita Manilla-Blank, wife of Bruce Blank, Gaithersburg, Md.; and Nadine Babington, wife of Shawn Babington, Cooksburg, Pa.; two sons, Bernard A. Manilla and his wife, Lana, Concord, Ohio; and Richard L. Manilla and his wife, Michelle, Hermitage; one sister, Gilda Rusbashan, Sharon; 10 grandchildren, Trevor, Natalie, Katie, Melissa, Wayne, Gus, Ben, Ricky, Joey and Francesca; two sisters-in-law, Helen Manilla and Virginia Galardo, both Sharon; and several nieces, nephews and godchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Mike, Vito, Pete, Joseph and Lou Manilla; and three sisters, Mary Mensurati, Rose Ragosta and Caroline Jordan.
