Oscar English Simpson
Honored WWII vet lived in WM, worked at Sharon Steel

Oscar English Simpson, 54 North St., West Middlesex, died at 2:45 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2003, in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. He was 81.

Mr. Simpson was born March 28, 1921, in Berea, Ky., to Jacob Newton Simpson and Catherine Woolem Simpson.

An employee of the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant for more than 30 years, he served as chief electrician in the electric furnace.

Mr. Simpson was an Army veteran, having served in the Philippines and in the South Pacific in the infantry and as a paratrooper during World War II. For his bravery, he earned a Bronze Star.

He was raised in the Baptist church and was a resident of North Street for more than 35 years.

His wife, the former Audrey Mae Griffith, whom he married July 7, 1941, survives at the residence in West Middlesex.

Also surviving are: one daughter, Audrey J. Williams, West Middlesex; one son, Russell and his wife Susan Simpson, Leetonia, Ohio; one sister, Linnie Koester, Englewood, Ohio; six grandsons, Garold, Jeffrey and Darryl Williams; and Guy, Shawn and Michael Simpson; two granddaughters, Terrie Rayburg and Brandi Simpson; one great-grandson, Lincoln J. Rombold; and two great-great-granddaughters, Tara Gelesky and Kaitlyn Williams.

Mr. Simpson was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Clyde, Charles, William, Carlos, Donald and Ronald Simpson; three sisters, Jessie Taylor, Laura Rector and Rose Clearwater; one son-in-law, Autry Williams; and one great-great-granddaughter, Chloe Star Gelesky.

Nicholas Costes

Farrell native was distance runner, 1956 Olympian

LEXINGTON, KY. -- Nicholas Costes, Troy, Ala., formerly of Farrell, died at 2:10 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2003, in Hospice Care Center from complications of cancer. He was 76.

Mr. Costes was born Aug. 3, 1926, in Farrell to the late George and Eva Singelis Costes.

He received his master's degree in education from Boston University and went on to become a professor of kinesiology at Troy State University.

Mr. Costes was a pioneer in the field of long distance running, with numerous honors including representing the U.S.A. in the marathon in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, as well as membership in the Road Runners Club of America Hall of Fame.

He is survived by: his daughter, Pam Harris, and son-in-law, John Harris, Nicholasville, Ky.; and two grandchildren, Lauren and Ryan Harris.

Helen Meehan

50-year Catholic Daughters member had lived in Sharon

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Helen Meehan, Fort Worth, formerly of 800 Linden St., Sharon, passed away Sunday morning, March 9, 2003, in Harrison Southwest Hospital. She was 86 years old.

Mrs. Meehan was born Sept. 1, 1916, in Sharon to Lester and Ellen Patterson.

Helen was married to Edward J. Meehan on May 26, 1936. She was preceded in death by him on Sept. 8, 1982.

She was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon and was a 50-year member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas Sharon Court 507.

Surviving are: one son, Gerald Meehan, Fort Worth; one daughter, Joyce Bayuk and her husband Paul Bayuk, Greenville; one grandson, Stephen Bayuk, also Greenville; two sisters, June Doholla; and Norma Koss and her husband, Gene, all Sharon; plus a host of nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Edna Patterson, Shirley Hoyson and Thelma Patterson; and four brothers, George, James, Edward "Ted" and William Patterson.

As a devout Catholic, she loved her faith and passed it on to her family. During her lifetime, she was strong in her faith and strong in life.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 20, in Church of the Sacred Heart. The Rev. Stanley Swacha will be celebrant.


Nicholas 'Nick' J. Dan
FHS title team player was vet, worked at Pentagon

Nicholas "Nick" J. Dan, 1365 Bolde Drive, Hermitage, died of natural causes at 4:55 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2003, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. He was 68.

Mr. Dan was born Aug. 27, 1934, in Masury to Nick Dan and Elizabeth Coman Dan.

Nick was a graduate of Farrell High School Class of 1952, where he played on the Pennsylvania state championship basketball team for that season. He received his bachelor's degree in history from Marietta (Ohio) College in 1956, having received a full basketball scholarship.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during peacetime in Karlsrue, Germany, following his college education.

Following his discharge from the Army, Nick was an analyst for the Department of Defense in the Office of Naval Intelligence in the Pentagon, Washington, D.C.

Surviving are: his mother, Elizabeth Dan, Hermitage; his sister, Helen Szakach, wife of Alex, also Hermitage; and a niece, Nicolene Cole, wife of Michael, Warren, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his father, Nick Dan, who died Jan. 7, 1974.

Freda 'Fritz' C. Novak

Active church member worked in food service

Freda "Fritz" C. Novak, Hermitage, formerly of Jefferson Township, passed away at 8:05 p.m. Sunday (3-16-03) in John XXIII Home, Hermitage. She was 88.

Mrs. Novak was born Oct. 5, 1914, in Farrell, a daughter of James Morsillo and Louise Davano Morsillo.

A lifelong area resident, she was a 1933 alumna of Farrell High School.

Fritz co-owned Freeway Pizza in Sharon from 1968 to 1975. She previously had been a baker in the cafeteria of Mercer High School from 1962 to 1968.

During World War II, she was employed by the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. Fritz was last employed at Burger King, Hermitage, where she worked until she was 70 years old.

Fritz was an active member of St. Anthony's Church in Sharon. She was a seamstress and enjoyed baking, particularly for family and friends.

Her husband, Stanley Novak, whom she married June 13, 1936, passed away Sept. 18, 1962.

Surviving are: one son, John Stanley Novak and his wife Wendy, Shenango Township; and three stepgrandchildren, one stepgreat-grandchild and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.

Besides her husband, Fritz was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Joseph, Patrick and Louis Morsillo; and a sister, Mary Morsillo.

Farrell native lived

in Delaware County

LIMA, Pa. -- Angeline M. Tomich Severdia, Wallingford Nether, Providence Township, Delaware County, formerly of various other towns in Delaware County and Farrell, died at 7:05 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2003, in Fair Acres Geriatric Center, Lima. She was 80.

Mrs. Severdia was born May 2, 1922, and raised in Farrell, a daughter of Blaso and Kata Boycich Tomich.

She was a graduate of Farrell High School Class of 1942.

She was a member of Nativity B.V.M. (Blessed Virgin Mary) Church, Media, Pa.; and was a former member of St. Alice Church, Upper Darby, Pa.; and St. Anthony Church, Sharon.

A homemaker, Mrs. Severdia enjoyed baking for others.

She lived in Providence Township for the past six years.

Her husband, George Severdia, died in 1956.

Surviving are: two sons, Anthony G. Severdia, Wallingford, Pa.; and Joseph B. Severdia, Broomall, Pa.; five daughters, Mary K. Severdia, Bronx, N.Y.; Louise A. Brauner, Wallingford; Christine Ainsworth, Aston, Pa.; Rosalie H. MacDonald, Folsom, Pa.; and Imelda B. Severdia, Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Jennie Bartolon, Farrell; and three grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Severdia was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
